The Firm

Cubism Law is an exciting, disruptive next generation international law firm – a ‘Super Boutique’, which combines the best attributes of traditional law firms and ‘dispersed’ law firm models; but without the downsides of either one. It is cloud-based but operates from smart offices in central London.

Our firm has experienced unprecedented growth in recent times – as a result of other capable lawyers like you seeing things from our unique perspective.

The firm has a full back office – marketing, compliance, HR, finance and operations teams and is managed by a board of directors with significant legal and business experience – a team comprised of both lawyers and non-lawyers who ensure that our firm operates to an optimum level for its customers and for its people. The level of support given liberates our partners so that they can concentrate on providing service excellence to their customers. They are also encouraged to build their team of associates, paralegals and trainees as their practice grows within the firm.

Our model compensates our lawyers directly for the work they do for their customers and our lean and innovative reward structure means that Cubism lawyers are not billing to feed a partnership structure that one typically finds in a traditional law firm.

The other major difference between Cubism Law’s model and that of a traditional law firm is the lack of billing targets for Cubism’s lawyers. This contrasts directly with traditional law firm models where lawyers have billing targets required to support a complex partnership structure and overhead – resulting in an obvious conflict with the needs of customers.

A unique thing about our partner reward model is that we purposefully compensate partners for collaborating and sharing work among their colleagues in our firm. This sets us apart from traditional law firms. Currently approximately 30 per cent of our annual revenue is earned from partners of the firm sharing customer instructions with each other. This ensures all our customers deal with the true expert who matches their exact need.

All these measures mean that our customers are serviced quickly, efficiently and always by a highly motivated lawyer who is the expert in their field.

Finally, the efficiency of the Cubism Law lean model allows partners to earn far more than what they were earning at traditional law firms. This allows us to attract and to retain the best legal talent to service our customers.

The Role

At this crucial stage on its journey, the firm has an opportunity for a polished, highly-motivated, smart-thinking and driven partner or team to strengthen our commercial technology offering. We are keen to develop our team across corporate/commercial tech; IP; Brands; fintech and blockchain.

We have developed a unique ‘Lawyer Lifecycle’ model, which goes through five phases:

  • Building your competency as a lawyer
  • Developing your leadership skills
  • Developing your own client relationships
  • Building your practice and your team
  • If you wish to, eventually selling the business you have built up

Our results speak for themselves and we have a number of compelling stories to tell where Cubism partners have built their practices three or four-fold since joining.

You will be ready to grow further as a lawyer and as a senior member of the team and be looking to capitalise on your background and track record as a commercial/IP/technology solicitor – and be someone who really enjoys and thrives in such an environment. You will relish the chance to be liberated; set free from billable hours targets and the other cultural stresses and strains of a conventional partnership.

It is likely that you will have benefited already from good training and already be networking well and building your practice and your reputation in your field of law. It is also likely that you will be the personality type who relishes challenge, is prepared to fight your client’s corner and yet is someone who creates a calm, assured and well-executed, detail-conscious outcome in a complex legal environment.

You will look to work closely as part of a tight-knit and transparent team, but be a self-starter and – like our other lawyers who see things from several perspectives, be always looking to challenge the norm and take responsibility to improve things towards a better outcome for your client.

You will also love working with, inspiring and motivating the people around you to get the most out of them and to enable them to get the most out of themselves.
