Workplace fraud crimes 'increase'
Published on 28 Aug 2009 under category: legal
Instances of workplace fraud crimes have risen, the latest statistics have shown.
Figures from the 260 members of CIFAS revealed that there was a 69 per cent increase in workers gaining from theft or deception in the first half of 2009 when compared with the same period last year.
These statistics are based on the number of cases filed by companies relating to these actions, which could include fraud crimes.
Peter Hurst, chairman of CIFAS, commented that while most employees are still trustworthy, these figures suggest that desperate times "lead to desperate measures", with the economic downturn possibly driving some workers to theft, deception or fraud crimes.
He said: "Businesses need to put in place all possible controls to ensure that they, their employees and customers are not subjected to fraud risks that can be avoided."
Earlier this week ,a former KMPG director appeared in court due to allegations that he defrauded the company out of hundreds of thousands of pounds.
