'Vigilance needed' to avoid identity fraud crimes

Published on 15 Oct 2009 under category: legal

Britons must be careful and vigilant to avoid being the victims of identity fraud crimes, an expert has said.

James Webb, identity fraud expert and spokesperson for National Identity Fraud Prevention Week, commented that there are several steps people can take to safeguard themselves against such fraudulent activities.

He explained: "They should firstly keep personal and confidential documents secure, and, if they are going to dispose of them, make sure that they always cross-cut shred the documents before disposing of them."

Mr Webb also claimed that consumers should be vigilant when conducting transactions, with this being especially true while they are online.

He added that people should be careful with the data that they input on social networking websites, as this information could allow fraudsters to build up a profile on them if they were to find out their address.

According to a recent study by Fellowes and the National Fraud Authority, 97 per cent of employees are not completely confident that their firms are protecting consumers from fraud crimes.
