Twitter hacking 'political, not fraudulent'

Published on 21 Dec 2009 under category: legal

The recent hacking of Twitter appears to have been for political rather than fraudulent reasons, an expert has asserted.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, explained that the social networking website was taken over when an individual or group changed its look-up.

This resulted in users being taken to a page that was not under Twitter's control.

He said: "All Twitter users should be grateful that the page only displayed a political message, rather than attempted to steal identity information or install malware."

However, the expert added that there has been speculation that the systems that Twitter uses to secure its user records may have been compromised.

Earlier this month, the Metropolitan Police announced a crackdown on online fraud crimes.

The force revealed it was closing down fraudulent websites which were looking to scam consumers over the Christmas period, including those claiming to sell items such as Ugg boots and designer clothing.
