Tapui opts for jury trial

Published on 8 Dec 2009 under category: legal

Baroness Scotland's former cleaner has pleaded not guilty to fraud crimes.

Loloahi Tapui also denied using a false passport and overstaying her visa.

The 27-year-old opted for a trial by jury during the appearance at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court.

This decision means that the Baroness is likely to be called as part of the legal proceedings.

The Tonga was sacked by the Baroness when allegations regarding fraud crimes first came out earlier this year.

Ms Tapui could face up to ten years in prison if she is found guilty of fraud, while she could be handed a shorter sentence and a fine for using a false passport and overstaying her visa.

A date for the trial is expected to be set on January 13th.

Max Clifford, who is acting as a public relations advisor for Ms Tapui, last month denied that the 27-year-old misled the Baroness regarding her eligibility to live and work in Britain.
