Staff pose business security risk

Published on 19 Nov 2009 under category: legal

Employees are a risk to data held by businesses.

This is the view of Paul Mutton, internet services developer at Netcraft, who said that workers should be given guidelines which could help them avoid losing information.

He explained how files stored on a computer can be accessed by those looking to commit fraud crimes.

Mr Mutton said: "If someone is working from home and their laptop gets compromised by something else, even if the data is encrypted, it is always possible that the data can be stored and transmitted through some other channel through a Trojan."

He added that in light of such incidents, more companies are becoming proactive in protecting their data, which could result in fewer identity theft crimes.

These comments come shortly after it was revealed that staff at T-Mobile had passed on millions of customer records to third-party brokers, in what is thought to be the largest ever data breach of its kind.
