Published on 17 Dec 2009 under category: legal

Two sisters have appeared in court charged with attempting to claim £161 million in VAT payments.

Andrea and Roberta Owen are facing two joint charges, while Andrea is also accused of four counts of fraud.

Meanwhile, Roberta is appearing in court in relation to two other fraud charges.

The pair, who are both from Colwyn Bay, are accused of entering a false VAT claim for £161 million in December last year.

They are also charged with fraudulently evading VAT payments between July 2008 and January 2009.

Both have been granted bail and will return to Llandudno Magistrates Court on February 17th 2010.

No pleas were given during the hearing.

Earlier this week, it was claimed that the European Union may have lost out on as much as €5 million (£4.5 million) through carbon trading VAT fraud crimes.

These cases relate to individuals purchasing carbon credits in Europe and then fraudulently reclaiming the tax in the UK.
