Professional negligence in property sector 'needs to be addressed'
Published on 24 Feb 2010 under category: legal
Consumers are often unaware of what they are paying for when using property services, the industry body has claimed.
The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors called on the government to address poor practices and inconsistencies which can leave consumers shocked by unexpected fees and charges.
Following a consultation launched in April last year, Rics found that stakeholders, including property professionals , consumer and business clients and regulators were concerned about how information was being relayed by property service professionals.
Regulations are needed to make sure information is accurate and is available in time for customers to make informed choices, according to the body.
Max Crofts, Rics president and chairman of the Transparency Working Group, said: "The industry will do what it can, but to obtain consistency in transparency of fees and commissions across the entire industry action and legislation is needed from government."
Rics also said that the formation of an independent body with powers legislated for by the government would be vital to co-ordinate action with all stakeholders.
