Professional negligence claims for NI health trust
Published on 8 Jan 2010 under category: legal
Hundreds of professional negligence claims are being aimed at one healthcare trust in Northern Ireland.
A total of 440 claims were pending against the Western Health and Social Care Trust (WHSCT) at the beginning of last month, the Londonderry Sentinel reports.
This unusually high figure was greater than any other authority in the province apart from Belfast, where 900 professional negligence claims have been filed.
A number of other claims were also filed, including 67 employer's liability claims and 17 occupier's liability claims.
According to the newspaper, the figures were confirmed by Northern Ireland's health minister Michael McGimpsey during a question and answer session at Stormont Assembly.
The WHSCT is one of six health care trusts in the province, all of which were established in April 2007. The trusts are the main providers of health and social care in Northern Ireland.
In addition to being responsible for the management and administration of hospitals, the trusts also oversee the running of day centres, social care facilities and health centres.
