Pair arrested over internet fraud

Published on 20 Nov 2009 under category: legal

Two people have been arrested in connection with fraud crimes.

The pair were detained in Manchester in relation to an internet scam.

A man and a woman have been arrested after it was thought they could be behind the ZueS Torjan virus, which breaches security systems to obtain bank details and credit card information.

The virus is also able to copy passwords, with data being sent to a system controlled by the hackers.

This information could then be used to commit fraud and identity theft crimes.

Charlie McMurdie, a detective chief superintendent that head's the e-crime unit at the Metropolitan Police, told the Times that "millions of lines of data" have been taken through this scam.

He added: "This is known internationally as being a very sophisticated and malicious computer program or 'malware' that is used for infecting or accessing personal information and in this instance we have 10,000 computers worldwide that have been infected."

Last week, eight people were charged with alleged fraud crimes in relation to a multi-million dollar scam.
