MOT fraud crime couple ordered to pay £1.5m

Published on 15 Sep 2009 under category: legal

The couple behind the UK's largest MOT fraud have been ordered to pay more than £1.5 million to West Yorkshire Police.

Roobik Mizabegi and his wife, Julie, had previously been jailed for four and two jails respectively because of these fraud crimes.

It was found that the pair had issued thousands of MOT certificates to vehicles that had not been properly tested over 13 years.

A confiscation hearing at Bradford Crown Court heard that they had made £1,511,530.98 from the scam, which now must be repaid.

Detective chief inspector Simon Beldon commented: "This confiscation order is the largest amount recovered by the City and Holbeck Division's proceeds of crime team since its launch and sends a clear message to criminals that crime doesn't pay."

In January, Mr Mizabegi was given a four-year prison sentence due to one charge of concealing the proceeds of criminal conduct and three of conspiracy to defraud.

His wife, meanwhile, was jailed for two years for assisting another to retain the benef of criminal conduct and obtaining services by deception.
