Mergers likely in commercial litigation, says survey

There may be a surge in mergers by some of the UK's top 100 law firms, according to a new survey.
Legal bookseller Sweet & Maxwell's annual survey of law firm finance directors revealed that ten per cent of law firms said that a merger is likely and 20 per cent plan to expand overseas.
As many as 40 per cent of firms surveyed also claimed that hiring senior legal teams from rival firms this year would help them to boost high-priority areas such as
commercial litigation to improve profitability.
Tony Williams of Jomati Consultants told City AM: "There will be consolidation this year, but it will very much be at the smaller firms.
"International merger transactions amongst the big firms are likely to happen in 2011 or 2012."
The fastest growth is expected to be found in fraud and insolvency sectors, according to respondents, although all categories are expected to increase as the industry recovers from the recession.
