Mabey and Johnson fined over corruption

Published on 28 Sep 2009 under category: legal

A construction firm has been fined £3.5 million in relation to corruption and breaching sanctions.

Mabey and Johnson, a British company which operates abroad, was hit with this due to links with influencing officials during the process of bidding for contracts and making payments to Iraq between 2001 and 2002.

The firm pleaded guilty to breaching United Nations' sanctions and overseas corruption, fraud solicitors may be interested to hear.

It was fined £3.5 million by a judge at Southwark Crown Court and also ordered to pay a £1.1 million confiscation order and £350,000 in costs.

Richard Alderman, director of the Serious Fraud Office, commented that this is a landmark case as it is the first time a conviction has been made in this country for corruption overseas and for breaking UN sanctions.

In other news which may interest fraud lawyers, last week a man appeared in court in relation to multi-million pound counterfeiting crimes.

Gary Bellchambers admitted his involvement in a scheme involving fake gold equipment.
