Local council highlights its anti-fraud crime measures

Published on 26 Jun 2009 under category: legal

A local authority has stated that rigorous auditing has been behind its success in preventing fraud crime in the organisation.

Nigel Broadbent, chief finance officer for Calderdale Council, highlights the government body's "robust systems" of internal control procedures.

He states: "Frauds actually committed against the council are relatively few for the size and complexity of the organisation."

According to the Halifax Courier, 12 workers were sacked or resigned last year following a number of fraud crime investigations. In a statement, the chief finance officer told the news provider that in 2007-08 there were no firings and only two resignations.

Mr Broadbent says that the number of financial transactions and systems dealt with by the council means that the amount of cases has not been excessive.

"We do take any potential or alleged fraud cases extremely seriously," he emphasises.

He states that there has not been a serious fraud case in the council for a number of years.ADNFCR-2391-ID-19238222-ADNFCR
