Jobseekers targeted by fraud crimes

Published on 9 Nov 2009 under category: legal

Jobseekers are being hit by fraud scams, it has been claimed.

Graduates looking for employment online are being targeted by identity fraud criminals, according to the Guardian.

The newspaper noted the case of Oliver Mernick-Levene, who applied for an attractive position he found on the web.

He was contacted by the website offering the job, which told him that he was a leading candidate for the position.

But, he needed to hand over £99 to improve his chances by allowing the firm to overhaul his CV.

Mr Mernick-Levene said: "He was quite insistent about the money. He also asked lots of questions about my private data on the pretext of confirming my details."

At this stage he realised that the job was most likely a scam and declined to take the application any further.

Last week, a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology claimed that consumers need to be aware and alert to avoid being the victims of hackers and fraud crimes.
