Identity fraud 'on the increase'

Published on 19 Mar 2010 under category: legal

The number of people falling victim to identity fraud increased by 20 per cent last year, new figures show.

According to credit reference agency Experian, some 72 per cent of all ID left attempts in 2009 occurred in the second half of the year.

It said wealthy people continued to be the most likely victims, particularly company directors and business owners.

Looking ahead, Experian predicted further increases in ID theft in 2010, meaning more people could find themselves needing the help of identity fraud lawyers.

"Attempted fraud is on the increase," confirmed Experian spokesman Nick Mothershaw.

"Financial stress brought about by the recession is driving increasing numbers of people to commit fraud to maintain their lifestyles."

He said financial institutions could therefore face "sustained" fraud attacks over the months ahead.

According to the latest Online Fraud Barometer from VeriSign, more than one in ten internet users have been a victim of ID fraud in the past year.
