Identity fraud crimes rise during recession

Published on 8 Oct 2009 under category: legal

Identity fraud crimes are on the increase, according to an expert.

Neil Munroe, a spokesman for Equifax, commented that recent statistics suggest that this is the case.

He said that historically, these kinds of crimes rise when "times get tough".

Mr Munroe explained: "If you look at some of the previous recessions there is a temptation for people to get involved in this [fraud] when they become desperate for finances when times get harder."

He added that consumers need to be aware of this and on their guard so they do not become victims of identity fraud crimes.

Mr Munroe stated that they can do this by thinking about all of the different places where their information may be available.

According to statistics from CIFAS, more people are protecting themselves against these kinds of fraud.

The figures revealed that 19,100 people have taken out the body's protective registration so far in 2009.
