Fraudsters target social media

Published on 23 Nov 2009 under category: legal

Fraudsters are likely to continuing using fake social media pages to con consumers.

This is the view of Luis Corrons, technical director at Panda Security, who said that the company does not doubt that people are working on spoof pages which are designed to trap users.

He explained: "Once cyber-crooks have user names and passwords they have all the details and can take any action from the account including spam comments with malicious links.

"The more people who use a platform, the web, or any other means, the more likely they are to be used by bad guys. They go where the money and people are."

Mr Corrons' warning comes shortly after PandaLabs discovered a spoof Facebook page which aimed to trick users into entering their usernames and passwords.

Data input onto this page will end up in the hands of the creator's of the fake website, with this information then at risk of being used as part of fraud crimes or identity theft.
