Fraudsters 'feasting' on consumer ignorance

Published on 26 Jan 2010 under category: legal

Consumers should make it much harder for identity fraudsters to get hold of their details, according to credit experts.

Following the recent National Fraud Authority (NFA) report, James Jones at Experian warned that consumers needed to take more precautions in order not to fall prey to the annual £30 billion lost to fraud.

He said: "Identity fraud is one of the fastest growing crimes of the 21st century. Many of us put our identities on a plate so it's hardly a surprise that the identity crooks have been having a feast.

"We must stop giving away our details so easily and then turning a blind eye to the common signs of fraud taking place."

Among the steps he recommended taking to avoid becoming a victim were checking bank statements and monitoring credit reports.

The NFA reported last week in the first comprehensive survey of fraud in the UK that on average the crime costs every adult in the UK £621 yearly.
