Firms address data security

Businesses are now giving more attention to data security, according to an expert.
David Emms, senior security researcher for the global research and analysis team at software security vendor Kaspersky, said that breaches of company systems need more attention and are becoming "well publicised".
He commented that data loss issues, which could lead to fraud crimes, cause embarrassment in the media for businesses.
Mr Emms said: "The need to take [preventative] steps has come out of all this publicity, because people have woken up and thought there is a danger to their reputation, and a danger to their data, and they cough up."
He added that the increased profile of data breaches means that the Commissioners' Office is likely to take action if a large firm is at the centre of such an issue.
Earlier this month, the Worldwide State of the Endpoint 2010 study, which was commissioned by Lumension, conducted by the Ponemon Institute, stated that a lack of executive-level support for security systems can cause data loss.
