Fight corporate fraud, former cop urges

Published on 30 Dec 2009 under category: legal

A former police intelligence officer has urged businesses to fight corporate fraud "on any level".

David Kearns, who now runs a fraud investigation agency, told the Birmingham Post that the recession has led to several companies relaxing their checks and balances.

This in turn is responsible for a sharp rise in cases of corporate fraud, as firms are unable to "police themselves" as they did in the past.

Mr Kearns added that one of the biggest problems in fighting corporate scams is that there are no official or reliable figures on how widespread the issue is.

"It is vital that companies fight corporate fraud on any level because although people may not think a little bit of theft here and there can hurt it can be disastrous for companies in the region," he commented.

"The idea that it is a victimless crime is nonsense."

Figures from the latest fraud survey from financial services firm KPMG suggest that more than two-thirds of executives feel that internal control is the best way to combat corporate fraud.
