Facebook sued over threat allegation

Published on 5 Oct 2009 under category: legal

Facebook is being sued by a man claiming that the social media website is allowing members to threaten him.

Jack Thompson, who has previously campaigned against violent video games, is asking for $40 million (£25 million) in damages.

He claims that the website is giving a platform for those wishing to issue threats to him, those involved with commercial litigation cases may be interested to hear.

Mr Thompson says that Facebook contains numerous groups which mention him, including one which asks members to hit him with an Atari games console.

It is suggested that he began receiving threats after appearing on television to criticise computer games such as Grand Theft Auto.

Mr Thompson is not the only person launching commercial litigation against Facebook - it is also being sued by a software firm which claims that it has violated a patent.

WhoGlue says that the online social media portal is infringing a two-year-old patent in relation to privacy settings.
