Expert gives web hack warning

Published on 27 Oct 2009 under category: legal

Website vulnerabilities to hacking are "out there", an expert has claimed.

Yuval Ben-Itzhak, chief technology officer for Finjan, said that, while there are a "multitude of solutions", there is not a clear protocol to solve these problems.

He said that for every thousand lines of website code, there is at least one vulnerability which could let perpetrators of identity theft gain access.

Mr Ben-Itzhak commented that information stolen from online sources can be used in many ways by criminals, adding that there is a "big market" for this data.

He explained: "They can do the simple thing of sending them spam messages. Or phishing messages. Things that are tailored to their details to make it (the phishing) more reliable. They can also use this pretend information and auction it online."

Recently, the Guardian revealed that its online jobs section had been hacked, with around five per cent of user accounts on the website had been compromised.
