Ex-footballer accused in £2m fraud case

Published on 8 Jun 2009 under category: legal

A former footballer has been accused of being involved in a VAT fraud case worth £2 million.

Tony Thomas, who used to play for Everton, will appear in court in Liverpool this week for his alleged involvement in a six-year fraud case, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The player is alleged to have sold children's clothes, animal feed, straw and hay, supposedly zero-rated goods, to claim back VAT.

Allegations also state that the gang carrying out the scam then spent the money on property, with it taking place between 1998 and 2004, the newspaper reports.

The trial will take place this week, with Mr Thomas having being arrested and summoned to court last year and if convicted, the ex-player will face custody immediately.

Fraud investigators are also looking in to allegations into a property company which used sports stars to encourage people to invest in their firm, reports the Daily Express.
