Criminals 'use events to carry out fraud crimes'
Published on 2 Nov 2009 under category: legal
Fraud crimes centred around events and occasions are on the up, an expert has claimed.
Luis Corrons, technical director at Panda Security, said that search engine optimisation attacks regarding Valentine's Day, the death of Michael Jackson and swine flu have been seen this year.
He commented that there is very little people can do to protect themselves against these frauds.
Mr Corrons explained: "Unlike other attacks, such as scams sent via email, the user won't be able to recognise that the link is malicious, that's why the cybercriminals are launching these kinds of attacks."
However, he did say that there are basic steps people can do to in an attempt safeguard themselves from online fraud, suggesting that using web-filtering tools and internet security suites could help.
Panda Security recently warned that searches for Halloween have recently been used by hackers looking to carry out fraud crimes.
These can involve users being presented with message falsely telling them that their computer is infected with a virus.
