Consumers warned about identity fraud crimes
Published on 9 Dec 2009 under category: legal
Brits have been urged to be careful with their financial details due to the risk of identity fraud crimes.
Life assistance firm CPP has stated that more than 315,000 shoppers could be in danger of falling victim to such crimes this Christmas.
It was revealed that £600 is the average amount that people affected by identity fraud will have taken from their accounts.
Sarah Blaney, CPP's card fraud expert, commented: "It is important people protect their PIN numbers and check their receipts against their bank statements on a regular basis. We all need to be responsible to stop fraud."
Dr Glenn Wilson, visiting professor of psychology at Gresham College, said that the stress of Christmas shopping could result in consumers lose items such as bank cards, further putting them at risk of fraud.
According to CPP, consumers should avoid carrying multiple cards with them while shopping and should also make sure that they never write down their PIN.
