Consumers must 'change passwords' to avoid fraud crimes
Published on 12 Oct 2009 under category: legal
Increasingly sophisticated technology is putting consumers at risk of fraud crimes, it has been suggested.
Carole Theriault, senior security consultant at Sophos, commented that people are aware of phishing attacks and unsolicited emails, however, there are measures used by fraudsters that are less obvious to spot.
She said that some of these methods can be "very sophisticated", with consumers needing to have technology in place to prevent them being the victim of these attacks.
Ms Theriault stated that ways in which people can safeguard themselves from online identity theft include regularly changing their passwords and being vigilant.
She added that consumers may also want to consider using agencies that manage their passwords, citing RoboForm and KeePass as examples of these.
In other news, it was recently revealed that the passwords of more than a quarter of a million email accounts were posted online, leading to concerns over potential identity fraud crimes.
