Conservatives 'to overhaul fraud crimes investigations'

Published on 2 Sep 2009 under category: legal

The Conservatives could overhaul the way in which fraud crimes are investigated if they come to power, according to a source.

It has been reported in the Times that lawyers in the City believe that a new agency would be created, which could spell the end for the Serious Fraud Office.

The newspaper states that the newly-formed body could be called the Financial Crime Agency, those involved in investigating corporate fraud and white collar crimes may be interested to hear.

According to the reports, this could take place in the first year of a Conservative government coming to power.

It is also claimed that a white paper has shown that the party also plans to close the Financial Services Authority.

Last week, figures from the 260 members of CIFAS showed that there was a 69 per cent rise in the number employees gaining from deception or theft in the workplace during the first half of 2009 when compared to the same period last year.
