Business too slow to take on new staff, says FSB

Published on 22 Apr 2010 under category: legal

Two-thirds of businesses in the UK will be unable to take on new staff in the next three months, according to new research from an industry body.

The Federation of Small Businesses reported in its 'FSB Voice of Small Business Index' that almost a quarter (23 per cent) expect their financial situation to become more precarious in the next quarter.

However, just under a fifth (16 per cent) believe there may be improvement, despite the overall reluctance to take on more new staff.

Its figures follow the latest employment data from the Office of National Statistics.

Unemployment has officially risen to 2.5 million.

On the findings, John Walker, the national chairman of the FSB, said: "The FSB is calling for a renewed economic stimulus to help small businesses continue to create jobs, get access to crucial finance, innovate and start up new businesses, to get us squarely on the road to recovery."
