Brit accused of debit card fraud
Published on 23 Dec 2009 under category: legal
A British man has appeared in an Australian court in relation to fraud crimes.
Elangovan Ganeshamoorthy is one of two people accused of what is thought to be the Australia's largest-ever debit card skimming scam.
The Brit is charged with conspiracy to defraud as part of a multimillion dollar operation which saw money stolen from the bank accounts of McDonald's customers.
Mr Ganeshamoorthy was arrested earlier this week and subsequently made a brief appearance in court.
It is thought that police believe the men were part of an organised crime group that tampered with hand-held debit card machines that were used by customers across several McDonald's stores.
Police have commented that as much as AUS $4 million (£2.2 million) may have been stolen from around 4,000 people during the scam.
Earlier this week, six people appeared at City of London Magistrates' Court in relation to a £50 million mortgage fraud scheme.
