Black to launch fraud appeal
Published on 7 Dec 2009 under category: legal
Conrad Black is set to appeal against his fraud conviction later this week.
Black, the former owner of the Daily Telegraph, was jailed for six-and-a-half years in 2007 in relation to a multimillion-dollar embezzlement scam.
This crime related to his Candian holding company Hollinger International.
However, tomorrow (December 8th) he will take his case to the US Supreme Court.
A hearing will allow Black to outline a case against the 'honest services' law that has been used to prosecute numerous executives in fraud cases.
He is expected to argue that he cannot be guilty of breaching this regulation, as he believed that he was entitled to the money and therefore he did not mean to cause harm to his holding firm's stock holders.
It is thought that this could represent a landmark fraud crimes case, due to the questioning of the honest services law.
A final decision on Black's sentence is not expected until next year.
