Barnes moves out of bankruptcy
Published on 27 Oct 2009 under category: legal
The bankruptcy order against former footballer John Barnes has been removed.
Barnes was last week declared bankrupt in a Liverpool court.
However, at the time he claimed that this was due to an oversight and the bankruptcy has bow been rescinded, provided that the former Liverpool and England winger settles his tax bill by November 9th.
The star's bankruptcy solicitor said: "It was widely reported last week that HM Revenue and Customs had a bankruptcy order against John Barnes My client is delighted to announce that the order has now been overturned by the High Court. John Barnes was not and is not insolvent."
Barnes, who has became a football manager and media pundit since retiring from the sport, commented last week that the bankruptcy was linked to a tax error which he was in the process of dealing with.
At the peak of his career with Liverpool, Barnes became the first British footballer to earn £10,000 per week.
