Bahrain establishes dispute resolution centre
Published on 17 Mar 2010 under category: legal
A new dispute resolution centre has been established in Bahrain in a joint venture with the American Arbitration Association.
The Bahrain Centre for Dispute Resolution (BCDR) will deal with both public and private arbitration in the island country for international claims, lexology.com reports.
It has been established within an 'arbitration freezone', meaning that awards made by a tribunal will be exempt from facing challenges in Bahraini court if the dispute stems from a separate jurisdiction.
The BCDR can expect a busy first few months after the Bahraini government's decision to move some more serious commercial claims from Bahrain's courts.
This development is of significance because arbitration procedures are imposed on commercial disputes that come under the jurisdiction of the country's national courts, no matter what the intentions of the respective parties.
With its origins stemming from Bahrain's Vision 2030, the BCDR is guided by an international board of trustees and operates as an independent institution.
