BAE Systems to face charges after SFO probe?

Published on 1 Oct 2009 under category: legal

BAE Systems could face criminal charges after an investigation by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

The fraud crimes body has been looking into contracts won by the manufacturer.

It is thought that the SFO is set to bring charges related to bribery against the firm.

These allegations are linked to suspected payments made to win contracts in Tanzania, the Czech Republic, South Africa and Romania.

The SFO and BAE Systems had been in talks regarding a plea bargain, which could have seen the company admit guilt and face fines.

However, these discussions are thought to have broken down, with an announcement on the matter expected today (October 1st).

Earlier this week, a former Enron Broadband executive was jailed for fraud which was related to a press release which used language that falsely approved his firm's operating system.

Joseph Hirko was given a 16-month sentence and was ordered to pay around $7 million (£4.4 million) to the victims of his crime.
