Bosses may fear employment disputes once the World Cup kicks in.
Many employers may be expecting to deal with mass workplace absences and excuses from workers.
However, the employment relations body ACAS believes that it is possible to come to a happy compromise so neither side find themselves embroiled in an employment dispute.
According to the organisation, bosses should make it clear that they still expect high levels of performance from workers that have been given time away to watch matches.
Both parties can gain a lot from flexibility – if employers are willing to bend on start and finish times, workers are likely to be happier and more productive.
Communication and honesty are vital to avoid wrongful dismissal claims, according to ACAS experts.
John Taylor, executive at the organisation, said: "Big sporting occasions can present a number of dilemmas for employers who might be worried about the impact of less productive employees or the after effects of lively celebrations.
"Employers need to start planning now to avoid problems later on, check policies and procedures and remind staff how these work in practice."
