Workplaces to avoid employment disputes with workshops

Published on 20 Aug 2010 under category: legal

Three organisations have joined forces in a bid to educate employers about health and safety in the workplace.
This could reduce employment disputes between workers and employers, who may have failed to follow regulations.
According to the TUC, the Health and Safety Executive and the manufacturing organisation EEF, more than a quarter of UK fatalities in manufacturing involve maintenance work.
Commenting on the forthcoming workshops taking place across the UK, the EEF's head of safety policy Steve Pointer said: "The fact that maintenance is not directly part of the manufacturing process means that it is all too easy to forget when thinking about health and safety.
"But everyone has to carry out maintenance in one form or another and it can present some serious risks.
"That is why we are working together to help manufacturers manage maintenance risks."
The HSE have said taking part in the workshops could be a "very valuable investment" – which could mean that employers spending now could significantly reduce the chances of litigation.
