Workplace stresses to give rise to more employment disputes?

Published on 9 Aug 2010 under category: legal

More than half (54 per cent) of employees want their workplace to provide a private counselling service because they are unable to manage stress following the recession.
A survey by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) found that 84 per cent believe that the recession has made working more stressful, because of its impact on personal relationships, working lives and finances.
Just over a quarter (29 per cent) wanted some kind of support system in the workplace, whether it is for workplace problems or personal issues.
This suggests that there has been a massive shift in attitudes towards workplace stress, with around 78 per cent seeing employment problems as a significant enough issue to seek psychotherapy.

Rick Hughes, BACP's workplace lead advisor, said: "Organisations that provide counselling services for staff overwhelmingly find this translates to a multitude of positive benefits, including reduced absence, lower presenteeism, enhanced employee satisfaction, reduced accidents and improved productivity."

Some firms could find themselves facing more employment disputes if they fail to accept that some employees are suffering from substantial work-related stresses.
