The Home Office has confirmed that powers given to police by the Labour Government’s 2006 Terrorism Act, to detain terror suspects up to a maximum of 28 days without charge, will terminate on Monday at midnight.
It is expected that the number of days police may hold those suspected of terrorism will revert to 14, that formerly in force prior to the 2006 Act.
Whilst the Home Secretary, Theresa May introduced a six month extension of the 28 day period during July in the wake of the rise of the Coalition Government, the power itself has not been utilised by the police since mid 2007.
