Manufacturing companies in the UK could enter into more cases of commercial litigation, as they struggle cope in tough economic conditions.
EEF, the manufacturing body, published a report earlier this month forecasting that the industry will grow by 3.8 per cent this year.
However, the report's authors claim that the overall increase could hide significant differences in profits between individual sectors.
This could impact on levels of investment, with some businesses unable to expand.
Steve Knight, business manager at Newton, commented: "There is a lot of capacity in manufacturing and if the sales don't come through as much as they'd like - they [manufacturing firms] are going to have to continue to squeeze everything out of the current equipment that they've got.
"The next year is potentially going to see further consolidation, and a lot of manufacturers will be driving out costs as best they can to ensure they are the survivors."
