A consultant accused of medical negligence has denied that he was at fault for telling a pregnant woman with a healthy foetus that she must have an abortion.
Gynaecologist Dr Declan Egan said that any professional in his position would have given Martha O'Neill Brennan the same advice.
However, Ms Brennan was unable to undergo the procedure straight away and returned to the hospital later, requesting a second scan.
It turned out that she was still pregnant, despite Dr Egan's claim that the child was dead in the womb.
Since this case of medical negligence has been highlighted, several women have made similar claims against Irish hospitals that have failed to give patients second scans.
According to the Daily Mail, Mr Egan has been connected with other cases of medical negligence.
In one instance, a nine-year-old girl born with brain damage was awarded just over £2 million for a medical negligence claim.
