Male work-related stress could lead to employment disputes

Published on 13 Aug 2010 under category: legal

Male employees are more likely to take time off work due to stress than their female colleagues, a new survey shows.
According to healthcare cash plan provider Medicash, men are four times more likely than women to call in sick because of work-related stress.
Pressure at work is also driving employees to drink more, with male workers again more likely to turn to the bottle to relieve stress than female staff.
Sue Weir, chief executive of Medicash, said: "Workplace stress can be damaging on any level, affecting both the employee and employer.
"Bosses have a duty of care and responsibility to look after their workforce and have systems in place to address stress at work."
Companies that fail to take staff wellbeing into consideration could find themselves facing costly employment disputes.
The research listed heavy workload as a major contributor to workplace stress, as well as difficult clients, demanding bosses and inadequate technology.
