Increased workloads cutting into annual leave

Published on 13 Aug 2010 under category: legal

A large number of UK employees are unable to take their full annual leave entitlement because of a growing workload.
This is the conclusion of a survey by recruitment consultancy Randstand, which revealed that two-thirds of employees saw their workloads increase during the second quarter of the year.
Of these, four out of ten said the extra responsibilities are preventing them from taking time off from their jobs.
This could lead to a rise in employment disputes unless companies can introduce policies that will enable workers to take full advantage of their leave.
Some 63 per cent of those questioned said they find themselves having to work harder when a colleague is away, while 43 per cent continue thinking about work when they take a break themselves.
Ruth Jacobs, operations director of Randstad Staffing, said: "Our survey indicates that taking a proper break is getting harder and productivity is suffering as a result."
