GP found guilty of professional negligence

Published on 16 Jun 2010 under category: legal

A GP from Nigeria has been found guilty of professional negligence after administering an overdose of diamorphine to a pensioner who later died.

Daniel Ubani gave ten times the recommended dosage of the painkiller to the 70-year-old patient during his first shift in the UK.

He is now expected to be struck off the UK medical register.

The doctor was found to have made a series of other prescribing errors which a disciplinary panel ruled presented a significant risk to patients.

"It was unacceptable to prescribe and administer a controlled drug, diamorphine, with which he was not familiar," the panel stated.

According to the BBC, the Cornwall Primary Care Trust has since introduced tough new checks on foreign doctors.

Dr Ubani, who was previously base in Germany, had been accepted for work by the body prior to the incident in Cambridgeshire.

Applications from overseas medical professionals will now be considered by a medical performance panel.
