Employment disputes to rise 'with postal staff injuries'?

Published on 9 Aug 2010 under category: legal

More employment disputes could be on the horizon for Royal Mail after new figures show that staff injuries went up by 14 per cent last year.
According to the organisation, cycling postmen experienced around 1,065 injuries, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
It attributed the rise of almost a fifth to the rise of online shopping, with more customers using mail to receive parcels.
Postmen are being encouraged by Royal Mail to use vans or trolleys to prevent further injuries.
Staff who sustain significant injuries could enter into employment disputes with bosses, in a bid for compensation to cover the cost of treatment.
However, minister David Willetts has said that the switch to safer means would mean the end of the tradition of the cycling "postie".
Speaking to the paper, a Royal Mail spokesman said: "Royal Mail is making a number of changes in delivery methods as part of a £2 billion modernisation of its entire operation, and it is certainly not a straightforward switch to vans for those postmen and women who currently use bicycles."
