Employment disputes to rise with new equality strategy?

Published on 10 Aug 2010 under category: legal

The coalition has announced that it will develop a new business strategy to place more women into the boardrooms of major firms.
This could lead to an increase in employment disputes as more workers enter into grievances about unfair promotions and unequal treatment.
Lord Davies of Abersoch will be responsible for devising the new policies, which aim to see women take at least half of all the new appointments to boards by the end of the parliament.
Commenting on the government's decision to launch the report, Lord Davies said: "While it is essential that the boards of UK companies are meritocratic, the fact that there are only 131 female directors in FTSE 100 companies means that we cannot be using all the skills and talents that make our workforce so competitive."
Research from the Cranfield University found that only 12.2 per cent of FTSE 100 company directors are women.
In addition, only 7.3 per cent of FTSE 250 firms have women in the top position, with almost half of them without any women in boardroom positions.
