Social attitudes to lesbian and gay issues need to shift dramatically in line with legislation, according to one employment organisation.
The Trade Unions Congress this week said that it welcomed the coalition government's early support for progress, but said that it needed to show real commitment to changing social attitudes.
Gay and lesbian people may find themselves embroiled in employment disputes from employers.
Frances O'Grady, deputy general secretary at the organisation, said that while much had changed: "Scratch beneath the surface, and it's not quite so rosy.
"Ministers have already signalled the new public duty in the Equality Act will be pretty toothless - a case of light-touch implementation."
This could mean that employment disputes around discrimination could continue to arise in the workplace.
The deputy general secretary added: "If the new duty fails to deliver, then we must put pressure on both government and employers to raise their game."
