Employment disputes could be reduced with absence monitoring

Published on 29 Jun 2010 under category: legal

Employment disputes in the UK could be reduced if bosses institute absence monitoring procedures in the workplace.

New research from the insurance firm Unum has found that long-term absence due to stress is going down.

Employers may still find themselves dealing with casual sick days, especially during events such as the World Cup.

Commenting on figures, the Institute for Employment Studies' senior research fellow Sue Hayday said that workplaces needed to instigate "the creation of a culture which does not tolerate casual absence" and makes use of "trigger points and most importantly, ensuring that line managers are trained and able to manage the attendance of their staff".

The prospect of disputes around employment could be mitigated by practices such as back-to-work interviews and keeping data on absence patterns.

Employers should also be unafraid of offering incentives to workers, such as flexibility and being allowed to work at home.
