Employment disputes: Greater clarity 'could minimise' pay issues

Published on 23 Jul 2010 under category: legal

Businesses could benefit from making pay details clearer following recent research which indicated that many employees are baffled by their payslips.
A study by the Institute of Payroll Professionals (IPP) revealed that almost one in ten workers do not fully understand their payslips, a situation that could result in confusion and employment disputes over pay.
"Understanding all the details and figures in one's payslip is the only way to be completely sure that you are getting paid correctly," said the IPP's chief executive, Lindsay Melvin.
"This is particularly relevant with the growing number of organisations implementing e-payslips, by which employees may be even more confused because they are unfamiliar with a new format."
Separate research from recruitment consultant Badenoch & Clark revealed recently that more than eight million people are still earning less having accepted pay reductions during the recession.
Some 77 per cent of workers who took a pay cut during the economic downturn, rather than redundancy, are yet to see their wages restored to pre-recession levels.
