Corporate fraud lawyers get more from multinationals?

Published on 1 Jun 2010 under category: legal

Corporate fraud lawyers could have more to gain from tax investigations into multinational companies, according to new research.

UHY Hacker Young has found that the HMRC can recover around £181 for every pound they spend on a case, Accountancy Age has reported.

According to the paper, the researchers found that only £359 million was recovered from small firms and private individuals in the UK since May last year.

However, multinationals have yielded around £4.9 billion from corporate fraud enquiries.

Tax enquiries and corporate fraud lawyers' cases could increase, as the government aims to collect more money to reduce the deficit, claims one expert.

Speaking to Accountancy Age, tax partner at UHY Hacker Young, Roy Maugham said: "The government is under pressure to reduce the UK budget deficit and the expectation is that they will try and collect more money from tax investigations."

It was reported last week that the Financial Services Authority may merge with the Serious Fraud Office.

This could also result in more cases requiring corporate fraud lawyers.
