Commercial litigation to increase with climate change?

Published on 9 Aug 2010 under category: legal

Businesses could enter into more commercial litigation disputes if they do not address climate change risks to their business models.
Environment secretary Caroline Spelman called on businesses to prepare for the changes that global warming will bring.
A survey by the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs has highlighted how underprepared firms are for the impact of more droughts, heat-waves and other types of extreme weather.
Less than a quarter (23 per cent) has taken any concrete action to assess and protect their businesses.
This is despite the fact that more than one in three (31 per cent) had been affected by these conditions in the last three years.
Ms Spelman said this week: "We know that some level of change is now unavoidable and it is the responsibility of us all to think about what a changing climate will mean for our health, our businesses and our way of life.
"By planning for the adaptation we need now we can ensure that the UK is best placed to meet the challenges of climate change head-on."
